Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '97... wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be IT.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.

You are NOT as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't, maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't, maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's. Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance. Even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Happy New Year 2006/07

Go figure. Another year has come and gone. Think I was doing the exact same thing this time last year. Sitting at home, with my son, killing some time by doing dishes, straightening up a little, and hitting the land of Yahoo wishing people all the best in 2006 and wishing that their dreams come true.

Well? Here I am, a year later, doing the same thing. Well, not exactly the same thing. Everything seems to be the same up until I wish you all the best in 2006, except now we're talking 2007 !!

I do hope it's been a good year for you. Despite some speed bumps along the way.

Maybe you lost a friend, but found a new one along the way.

Maybe you discovered something about yourself that you didn't realize before.

Maybe you reconnected with a lost soul, whether it be your own or with a soul mate.

Maybe you lost someone near and dear to your soul, thinking life would never be the same without that person, only to wake up and discover you can go on, after reliving your time together and remembering this lost soul would have wanted you to. And so with a heavy heart, you do, as day by day, it gets a little easier, but never forgetting.

Despite all the speed bumps, you realize and are grateful for the things that have touched your life, your soul, in some way. Whether it be a feeling experienced that lifted your spirits, or the view you never noticed before from your window. The beauty of a wildflower (also known by some as a 'weed' lol)

I admit to having a rough year, as I have had in the past few. But thinks I am that much closer to getting where I need to be. Physically, as well as emotionally. And it has been a long and arduous journey. Actually thought of myself as Rip Van Winkle (think that's the guy) the other day. I've been sleeping the past 20 years. But getting my son on the right path in his life has been the most important thing, so yeah, I figured I sort of slept the past 20 years.

For those that don't know, my son is very special to me. And he needs all the love and support I can give him because he has nobody else. So yeah, I did put my life on hold for him, but I tell ya, he was worth it. He's a great kid. My New Years wish for him would be that other people that flit in and out of his life finally see the gentle, funny, intelligent, loving soul behind the face and take a more active interest in him.

Now for the next step in this journey of mine. To put the final pieces in the puzzle. For the both of us.

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve.

She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog,

Oopsies

As some of you might know, "Jester" blogged about being a bowler a little while ago.  ('He' is really going to miss that avatar haha)

"Jester" has really struggled with the bowling thing the last few years.  Finishing off the year with a 160 something year end average year after year, working 'his' butt off one year to get his average up to 182, only to have it come crashing down the following year into the 150's (a new low) and almost quitting the whole 'roll-the-ball-down-the-alley-and-hit-the-pins' concept a few times.

"Jester" had even wondered if 'his' struggles was due to having just too much crap on 'his' mind, what with life really biting 'him' in the butt lately.  But the acceptance of a special friend passing and coming to terms with it has helped.  'He's' still not quite up to the 182 average yet, but the bowling is getting better, holding 'his' own somewhere in the 160's at the moment.

Then the poor fool does something really stupid.  Well, I will give the guy credit.  When 'he' took on the secretary position for the Tuesday night league 'he' joined a couple years ago, 'he' really didn't expect to have the average keeper of his Saturday morning kids bowling quit and have to take on the secretarial duties of that this year too !!! So, 'he' has had to better organize his free time to get the paperwork done, which made a couple things suffer in the interim.

Anyhoo.  One of the perks of being secretary of a league and a member in good standing with the bowling association, is one is able to enter and compete in the League Executive Tournament this past Sunday.  'He' wasn't going to enter as one of three representatives of the league, but the treasurer couldn't make the tournament, so 'he' said 'what the hell' haha. All Jester was hoping to do was bowl 'his' average going into the tournament of a 153.  Sort of save face and not make a total fool of 'himself'.

Guess it helped 'him' being a little tired.  Was more relaxed I suppose.

So what did the silly fool go and do ????

'He' bowled three games and finished with a plus 124 pins over average and won the house round tournament in the Secretaries division with the honor to go to the Provincial round in February !!!

Boy, oh boy.  Did I ever kick 'his' butt around the place when I found out !!!  And to think 'he' didn't want to enter the tournament in the first place !!! hahahaha
